2012: the year of my tattoo

I’ve wanted a tattoo for about three of four years, but never got one. Why? Because I want it to mean something, to be very beautiful and to be something I’ll be proud of when I’m 70.

I’ve always been obsessed with birds and the meaning of my tattoo to mean freedom, independence etc. This is the biggest dream of mine and I am not so far off accomplishing it.

Here are some images inspiring me:

What do you think of these images? Do you have  a tattoo, did it hurt?

I can understand waiting. I have one on the side of my leg, I kind of wish I was a bit stronger with what I wanted. I love birds too, have been mulling over for the past year about getting a Peacock. Mine didn't hurt. Where would you have it?

I'm planning on getting my first tattoo this year too! I have wanted one for years, I really want a bird too. I think that they represent so much and that it would be nice to have a constant reminder of freedom xx

Love the idea of a bird tattoo! Let me know if you have it done.

Hi! lovely inspirational images! I had my first tattoo at 28 (8 years ago) after waiting ten years for it. This meant I was 100% sure I wanted one and like you, wanted something I'd be proud of. Everyone I know who's had tattoos young, regret their choices. Our tastes and interests can change so much even when we're adamant we won't, so it's worth waiting! I finally got mine after meeting my other half who's an artist and former tattooist, so it was extra meaningful for me, as I was able to get his designs tattooed by him! I have 6 tattoos now, including a 3/4 sleeve and a swallow above my ankle, and I don't regret any. Some of them were a bit painful though!

I love your bird idea. I've been wanting an owl for years, but I'm too poor. I have 3 tattoos and yes, IT HURTS!!!! But don't let that discourage you. Good luck :)

Sadly I am a chicken! I really want one to – a daisy and a ladybird! But I hate needles! My other half has 4 and he says they don't really hurt, only on tender spots of skin, so it depends where you have it.

I have four tattoos. One on my wrist, one on my waist and 2 at the top of my back. The pain almost feels like being scratched over and over again. And feels tender. I find it more like an irritation rather than a pain. And it's totally worth it!

I don't have one but do want one, have the same feelings about it as you, it has to be just right instead of something random that everyone has. I like the idea of the bird though its simple and has meaning to you!

i love bird tatoos, but dont have any (too afraid of pain)

Hi Sarah the only advice I can give you if youre not having it done by wonderful International Award winning Tattoo artist brother Who is also a brilliant ARTIST then make sure they really listen to what you want and that they can draw intricate details well. You don't want to be left with a black blob. lol xxxx

I love the 3rd option. Very cute.
I have a tiny tattoo on my ring finger. The woman said that it would really hurt but it didn't, it was like a scratchy tickle.

    Good luck!

Wow. I mean, seriously wow. I'm not really a tattoo lover, mainly because I know I'd never stand the pain, but you've made me half think I want one!

I have several tattoos, I always take a long time to think about them, keep the artwork up on a wall so I can see it everyday for months before to make sure I really like it. I have butterflies that trail up my leg and foot and I love it, I get so many compliments about it, its so delicate and detailed.
take your time. And don't be scared. Yes it does hurt but I find it very tolerable pain. DO find a tattooist you're really comfortable with – it makes all the difference
But the swallow idea is very sweet.
